The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
